Schmies, who moved to Laredo in 1994, was known for a career that spanned corporate leadership, education, and civic service. Born in Seattle, she first built a pioneering career at General Motors, where she became the first woman and the first African American to hold several supervisory and executive roles. After retiring from the automotive industry, she worked in event planning and consulting before turning her focus to education.
In 2009, Schmies joined Laredo College as a speech instructor. She later advanced into leadership positions, serving as department chair and eventually as dean of the South Campus. She held the dean’s role until retiring in 2021. Faculty and students credited her with a strong commitment to student achievement and high academic standards.
Schmies was also deeply engaged in community organizations across Laredo. She held leadership roles with the United Way of Laredo, including serving as its president, and was active with Literacy Volunteers of Laredo and the Optimist Club. Her work earned her multiple awards recognizing her service and advocacy.
Following news of her death, community members and local leaders shared tributes highlighting her mentorship, dedication, and lasting impact on education and civic life in Laredo.
