Smith was found Sunday, Dec. 21, with stab wounds inside a residence in Edison, New Jersey, after police received a 911 call reporting a stabbing, according to prosecutors. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities said her boyfriend, Jordan D. Jackson-Small, 35, was arrested on Dec. 23 and charged with first-degree murder. He also faces charges of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Edison Police Department.
Prosecutors did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding Smith’s death. Jackson-Small remains in custody pending court proceedings.
Family members said Smith is survived by a 3-year-old son, her parents, two younger siblings, and extended family. In a fundraising appeal, her aunt, Kira Helper, said the family is seeking assistance to cover funeral and memorial expenses, crime scene cleanup, therapy costs, legal and administrative expenses tied to the criminal case, and care for Smith’s child and dog.
The investigation into her death remains ongoing, authorities said.
