A suspect was killed and three people suffered minor injuries Friday after a shooting at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in northern Idaho, authorities said.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. in Wallace, when a man opened fire outside the sheriff’s office before entering the building, Sheriff William Eddy said at a news briefing. Officers confronted the suspect, who was killed during an officer-involved shooting. Authorities said there was no continuing threat to the public.

Two women who were sitting inside a vehicle nearby were struck in the legs and sustained minor injuries, Eddy said. A sheriff’s deputy was also injured after the suspect fired into the dispatch area of the building, suffering a minor wound to the ear.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene. Officials said inmates housed at the county jail at the time were not harmed and remained secured.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released. The criminal investigation is being handled by neighboring agencies, while the Idaho State Police is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Sheriff Eddy said officers from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and the Coeur d’Alene Police Department assisted in securing the area and collecting evidence.

Authorities urged residents to avoid the downtown Wallace area as the investigation continues.
