SeaWorld said Sunday that Katina, one of the park’s longest-living killer whales, has died at the age of 50.
The company said Katina’s health had declined in recent years as she aged. She died while under the care of animal specialists and veterinarians who had worked with her for nearly four decades.
Katina was known to visitors for her playful behavior, including sticking out her tongue, as well as her enthusiasm for what trainers described as “speed swimming.”
In a statement, SeaWorld said Katina had played a significant role in educating the public about killer whales and inspiring interest in the species. The company described her death as a difficult loss for staff members who cared for her over many years.
SeaWorld added that it appreciated messages of support from the public as employees and fans mourn her passing.
